Tributes

Sally D. Comer, MSW, PhD (1945 - 2014)

The Obituary, The New Haven Independent

It is with a heavy heart that I must write to report the passing of our dear friend and esteemed colleague Dr. Sally D. Comer, MSW, PhD, on September 24, 2014.

Sally was a highly respected and admired clinician, teacher, mentor, role model and leader — and the psychoanalytic and social work community here feels her loss very deeply.

She contributed her warm and energetic leadership to AAPCSW, chairing the student volunteers committee for the 2013 national conference in Durham, NC, and leading an outreach effort that made it possible for many more students and young professionals to get involved in the conference. She also chaired an outstanding panel, “Under One Tent: Mindfulness, EMDR, CBT, and Psychoanalytic Treatments.”

Sally and her husband, Sid, have been long-standing members of our psychoanalytic community. Sally's influence has been significant within the social work community, both through the NCSCSW, AAPCSW, and the UNC School of Social Work. As a member of PECC's Outreach Committee, she maintained a vital link with UNC mentoring many who became PECC students. In recent years, her contribution as a faculty member emerged as she contributed her own research in her course on Attachment and Psychoanalysis. We are all poorer today with her absence, and we honor Sally's spirit and her passion for psychoanalysis in our memories of her.
