PROGRAM

In his presentation, George Hagman will discuss the sea change that has occurred in our culture’s view of bereavement and mourning that forms the basis of his recent volume, New Models of Bereavement Theory and Treatment: New Mourning. In his talk, he will discuss the origin of the book as well as the fundamentals of New Mourning Theory. He will delineate the new psychoanalytic model of mourning that emphasizes the intersubjective context, affective diversity and multiplicity of responses to bereavement. The implications of the New Mourning model for clinical practice will be highlighted with clinical examples.

Presenter

George Hagman, LCSW is a clinical social worker and psychoanalyst in private practice in New York and Stamford, Connecticut. He is on the faculty of the Training and Research Institute for Self Psychology, and the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. He is the author of numerous published papers and several books including Aesthetic Experience: Beauty, Creativity and the Search for the Ideal (Rodopi 2006), The Artist’s Mind: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Art. Modern Artists and Modern Art (Routledge 2010) and Creative Analysis: Art, Creativity and Clinical Process (Routledge 2015). His recent volume New Models of Bereavement Theory and Treatment: New Mourning (Routledge) was published earlier this year and his edited volume, Art, Creativity, and Psychoanalysis: Perspectives from Analyst-Artists will be published in December.

Educational Objectives

  • Participants will acquire skill in person-centered assessment of bereavement reactions using the New Mourning model.
  • Participants will be able to implement clinical interventions that are specific to the needs of bereaved patients.
  • Participants will apply New Mourning criteria to assess treatment response and accomplishment of goals.
