PROGRAM
Presenter: Ellen Ruderman, PhD., LCSW
Dr. Ellen Ruderman, invites us into conversation about the challenges of practicing therapy, when threatening impositions of the current world outside induce states of helplessness and anxiety in both therapist and patient. As world events have become daunting and dangerous, this creates an opportunity, perhaps necessity, for therapists to examine and discuss our own inner process (or countertransference), and, to reconsider certain ‘tried and true’ practices. How do we maintain our focus on the internal lives of our patients, when external events have the capacity to greatly alter our patients’ emotional states, as well as our own? Is therapeutic neutrality really possible and is it in the best interests of the patient for the therapist to remain silent?
Dr. Ruderman invites us to explore and address this new reality, in which we therapists are equally assaulted by the impact of the political and societal incursions of our time, and may feel as helpless as our patients. How might we shift out of old therapeutic paradigms and become more attuned to the existential anxieties of our patients and ourselves?

Ellen Ruderman, PhD., LCSW is a Training and Supervising Analyst, at the Inst. of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles and has a private practice in Encino, CA. She received her Ph.D. from the Sanville Institute and has been on the Sanville Institute Advisory Board for many years. She chaired the AAPCSW National Study Group and the Sou. CA AAPCSW Chapter. Dr. Ruderman is a Consulting Editor of the Clinical Social Work Journal and has published many articles and several books, including “Contemporary Clinical Practice: The Holding Environment Under Assault,” that she co-edited with Dr. Carol Tosone.
